RJS fellows Tim Schuetz, 3rd year, Anthropology, doctoral student, studying civic data, archiving, and knowledge infrastructure in environmental justice communities, and David Banuelas, 4th year PhD student, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, worked with @Orange County Environmental Justice (OCEJ) to study the organization’s community science initiatives, focusing especially on soil lead contamination in Santa Ana. Over the last years — collaborating with journalists and UCI researchers — OCEJ members have started to identify lead exposure through expanded soil sampling. Right now, OCEJ is focusing on communicating the findings to both local government and community members.
