In January 2020, Paulina Mejia, then a second year student in the Master of Public Policy program at UC Irvine, completed a 10-month Community Water Internship with the Research Justice Shop. The Community Water internship was offered through the Water Resource and Policy Institute at Cal State San Bernardino, under the Disadvantaged Communities Involvement (DCI) program. Paulina worked as an intern from March 2019 – January 2020 completing 560 hours with RJS. During her Community Water internship, Paulina supported the co-directors with conducting a total of 12 Community Listening Sessions with members of designated disadvantaged communities across the watershed, 5 in San Bernardino County, 5 in Orange County and 2 in Riverside County. Each Community Water Intern publishes a report upon the completion of their internship on a topic of their choice. You can find Paulina’s report, “Community Listening Sessions throughout the Santa Ana Watershed,” here. In this report, Paulina describes her experience with working with disadvantaged communities and how their knowledge can assist local government and water agencies on how to integrate best practices for future decision making about water management and planning. Paulina is now a Civic Sparks Fellow with the City of Riverside, working on their Sustainability and Recovery initiatives.
