The event took place on October 18 & 19, 2017 and brought UCI climate scientists and marine biologists into direct interface with indigenous Master Navigators and Oceanic community organizers, internationally renowned anthropologists, climate and environmental researchers and activists, UCI faculty and students, students and faculty from other universities, members of the Oceanic diaspora in California, along with miscellaneous sailors and pacific maritime adventurers.
The event brokered substantial interdisciplinary networking between community representatives, scientists and activists. Connections were made between US-based environment activists and researchers, and island communities. The traditional and modern boat-building workshop raised important discussions of sustainable approaches to maritime construction, the inherent sustainability of wind powered ocean travel, and the development of modern craft rooted in Oceanic design and engineering solutions.
These traditions of ocean going canoe construction, navigation and seafaring (‘wayfinding’), by which the entire pacific was explored and settled, are currently under consideration for listing as an intangible cultural heritage ICH asset by UNESCO.
